I'd say if you are ever serious about making a short that you want to go to festivals with, shooting on film is the way to go. DVX100s are great cameras to shoot with but if you want someone to take your film seriously, film will set you apart from the pack, and it's not even that expensive.

I'm looking at Abel Cine Tech's website www.abelcine.com and the film cameras are actually cheaper to rent than the HD cameras. Kodak gives student a %30 discount on film if you pay in cash, then all you have left are the processing and transfer fees. 1200 feet of 16mm footage will cost about $200 to process and $350 to transfer. That's half an hour worth of original footage. You can then get your HD master captured as a Pro Res file and edit high quality HD footage at home on your computer. You can't beat that.

Another great fact about film is that it hold so much more information than video. I've overexposed my stuff by 3 stops and gotten it all back. During the telecine process the colorist just turned up the light on the Spirt and amazingly enough I got my picture back! It even had less grain. How many times have you overexposed your video wishing you hadn't?

I also find that I shoot a lot less footage when working with film. I plan my shoots out and know what I am going to be before I ever arrive on set. This makes the editing process even easier when there is only 30 minutes of footage to go through for a 6 minute film.

I think DVX100s and HVX200s are great cameras but I find people take my stuff a lot more seriously when they see the stuff I shot on film. Video cameras are great to practice with but film is the way to go when making something you want people to take notice of.
